A Trip to Puerto Princesa Palawan

Palawan is everybody’s dream to visit for, especially with the the inclusion of the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park or commonly known as PP Underground River in the list of the New 7 Wonders of Nature. And it’s a dream come true for me to visit Puerto Princesa Palawan.

Last May 28, 2014, i was sent by the school to attend the Philippine Schools, Universities, and Colleges Computer Education and Systems Society (PSUCCESS) 18th National Conference at the Skylight Hotel, Puerto Princesa, Palawan.

I am very excited for its my first time to visit Palawan. The seminar was so successful and i got a chance to meet Atty. Raymond Fortun as one of the resource speaker about cybercrime law.

As usual after the seminar i had my side trips to see the places in Puerto Princesa.

When i arrived at the airport, i ride a tricycle going to Skylight convention center (i thought that there is a taxi in the city :-)). The tricycle has a unique design.

After the seminar, i roam around the old public market to buy some souvenirs, t-shirt, which i usually bought every time i visit new places, roasted cashew nuts, and of course jewelries made of pearls which is considered as a must-buy souvenir in Palawan, I also visit the souvenir shop in the city, which sells a very affordable items.

At around 5:00 p.m. we drop by the Baywalk area to witness the sunset. It’s a beautiful place to relax, and there are restaurants in the area to dine. Crocodile Barbeque and Sisig must be tried. Well, my day will not be complete without a night trip, so i look for some entertainment. I just found out the e-Republik Comedy Bar located with in the city. It’s a nice place, and totally entertaining. If you are looking for KTV bars for night life, try to visit Equus KTV.

Baywalk SunsetIn the last day of the seminar, i am so excited for we will be visiting the Underground River and have some City Tour as part of our itinerary.

I woke up early in the morning and we took off at around 7:00 a.m going to the Underground River. It was almost 2 hours trip going to Sabang, and from there we took a motor boat ride going to the Underground River location.

No wonder why it was included in the list of the New 7 Wonders of Nature, it was a beautiful place, and stunning rock formation. The long trip was paid off, and i was really amaze with the place.

Underground River Puerto PrincesaAfter the Underground River tour, we proceed directly to our short city tour. We visit the Palawan Wildlife Rescue and Conservation Center, or popularly known as the Crocodile Farm, it is the home to Palawan’s endangered species. Aside from the different species of crocodiles, you can also find the famous Palawan Pheasant Peacock, Hornbill, Bearcat, Mayna and many other endangered animals.

Next, we proceed to Mitra’s Ranch, used to be a private property of the Mitra Family. There are lots of activities in the area like trampoline, horse back riding, and zip lining.

Next stop is Baker’s Hill, the home of the must-taste Hopia/Jopia. Apart from their food and restaurant, it has also a landscaped gardens and playground makes it perfect for a family hang out.

My trip will not be complete without visiting the church, so i try to locate the Our Lady of Immaculate Conception Church. Just beside the church is the Plaza Cuartel, it has the ruins of an old garrison and tunnels are proof of its grim past. According to my research, Plaza Cuartel is the site of Palawan Massacre. The tunnels were where 150 American prisoners of war were kept during World War II. But on December 14, 1944, the Japanese decided to kill them all by burning them alive. Many perished but eleven prisoners were able to survive and escape the mass execution.

I enjoyed my Puerto Princesa Trip, and for me its a dream come true, hoping to be back again to visit El Nido and Coron.

For affordable stay in Palawan, there are a lot of affordable pension houses with in the city which ranges from Php600-800 single occupancy, Php 750 double sharing. I stayed at Abelardo’s Pension in the first 2 days in a double sharing room. and in the last day, i stayed at Felix Pension who happens that the owner and staff is from Iloilo also.

Some tips if you go on a city tour. It ranges from 600 per head and you will be transport in a van. If you want to save, you can rent a motorcycle good for 5 persons for Php500, it would be Php100 per head only. The Underground River Tour is Php1,500 with free buffet lunch. But there are agencies that offer Php1,400 to Php1,300 only.
